Get Out of my way!

The bulker Alice Oldendorf, Waits at anchorage 7 for the Outbound OOCL Hong Kong to clear the narrows. Large ships must take turns traversing the Narrows, to prevent collisions. Ships are required to contact Vessel traffic Services as they Cross the ferry track and Bedford Instute of Oceanography. VTS functions like air traffic control for ships in the harbour.

Conjestion

Todays arrivals and departures seemed to conflict, causing ships to spend some time in the inner harbour.

Marina Ace went West of Georges Island to allow Oberon to Clear AutoPort.
Zim Panama Went East of Georges to Allow Oceanex Sanderling to clear Pier 42, and allow Stutgart Express to pass West of Georges outbound.
And the Tugs Centaurs and Pegusus arrived in preparation to return PSS Chumel Back to the Gulf of Mexico. All this was complicated by Chumel Sitting at Anchorage 1 with Ryan Leat in attendance.

Earlier in the Day, the Barge Atlantic Sealion came out of the Nova Dock.

the Colregs

The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea state who has the right of way. Everyone below you on this list must give way to you. In Halifax, a container ship usually falls under #6

1. Not Under Command
2. Restricted in Ability to Manoeuvre
3. Constrained by Draught
4. Fishing
5. Under Sail
6. Under Power
7. Seaplane

Lets also remember the Red Green Principle “Im in my van, he’s in his pinto, who has right of way?” – this principle is how merging works in NYC – im bigger so i have right of way.

Dont do this.. Despite what the colregs say, the Red green Principle wins.
