Cruise Season is Over

This morning was scheduled to be the last cruise ship of the season, however she sailed past. As a result the last cruise ship of the season was yesterday’s visit by Hamburg.

The Legend of the Seas arrived off halifax this morning but high winds and seas caused her to keep sailing on to Boston.
The cruise season will begin April 19 with the arrival of the regal princess on a 28 day Scandinavia and Russia cruise sailing from Ft. Lauderdale.

Hey, This isnt Bermuda.

Todays arrival of Explorer of the seas was the result of a weather related change in schedule. I had assumed this was the case when i discovered her arrival listed, but not appearing on the schedule. This led me to believe a trip to Newfoundland was adjusted due to weather.

Nope, todays arrival from New York brings passengers who were expecting to disembark in Bermuda. Bermudian Authorities requested the ship not dock there due to the aftermath of Hurricane Gonzolo, so the trip was re-routed to Halifax and Saint John.

Suffice it to say, the voyage is getting a chilly reception.

4 cruise ships for the day.

Balmoral to skip shelburne

Yesterday’s cruise ship arrival Balmoral is skipping it’s scheduled stop in shelburne due to the lack of a harbour pilot.

Shelburne is a non-compulsory area for pilots, and there is one, however he is reportedly currently on leave.
The captain of the Balmoral being unfamiliar with the waters and lacking current electronic charts, decided to bypass the port.
Though disapointon for town businesses, in light of the disasters caused by errors In confined water maneuvering (Costa Concordia and Queen of the North) it was a prudent decision.

Carnival Splendor

Carnival Splendor is making its first stop in Halifax to my Knowledge.

She is a bit of an Infamous ship. first, she was a sister of the Costa Concordia, which sunk off italy, but was transfered to parent company carnival during construction. She also suffered from a fire in 2010.

On 8 November 2010, at approximately 06:00 Pacific time, on the second day of a voyage from Long Beach to the Mexican Riviera, the ship experienced a fire in her engine room, cutting all electrical power. According to Carnival, a “crankcase split, and that’s what caused the fire”, adding it was isolated to the aft generator room. The fire was extinguished by the afternoon, and no one was injured. Nearly 4,500 passengers and crew members were on board at the time.

The crew was unable to restore power to the engines, and the ship was towed by tugboat to San Diego.Without power for air conditioning and refrigeration, passengers were fed rations delivered via U.S. Navyhelicopters from the aircraft carrier USS Ronald Reagan. Carnival Splendor arrived in San Diego under tow around sunrise on 11 November.
