CCGS Private Robertson V.C.

The First of the Coastguards Midshore Patrol vessels will be Private Robertson V.C.

From the Press Release:
In a solemn event at Irving Shipyard, Minister Peter MacKay, Minister of National Defence and Regional Minister for Nova Scotia and Minister Keith Ashfield, Minister of Fisheries and Oceans unveiled the first of nine ‘Hero’ Class Mid-shore patrol vessels currently being built for the Canadian Coast Guard. The Coast Guard ‘Hero’ Class vessels are named after Canadian heroes who have given the ultimate sacrifice for Canada. The first vessel in the class to enter service will be the CCGS Private Robertson V.C. Members of Robertson family accompanied the minister on the tour.

ShipYard News

Halifax shipyard rolled out the first of the Coast Guards Mid Shore Patrol Boats today.
(photo is through 2 fences).

In other shipyard news, Shelburne Ship Repair re-opened last month, and picked up contracts to repaint CCGS Earl Grey (based in Halifax) and perform maintinance on CFAV Sea Scheldt, a Navy Diving Tender.

Sambro Island Light

The oldest Lighthouse in North America and the Caribbean, built in 1758 as a landfall lighthouse (meant to help mariners find land) She is visible for 24 Nautical miles (44km) You Cann See the light to the top left of the page in the background image. (which is a chart of Halifax by Captain Cook.
Every year, as part of Sambro Days, the NS Lighthouse Preservation Society runs 1 day tours of the island. A good view can be had from Sandy Cove.

The Island features a tight Harbour

The dock is a flatish rock with iron loops anchored to it for boats to tie up.

Todays CCGS Activities

Shortly After, Alfred Needler returned and tied up at BIO. Primarraly a research vessel (hence her fishing (stern) trawler form, She is one of the CG ships to be replaced as part of the Government’s Ship Procurement Strategy. Her Sister shipe, the Wilfred Templeman has been renamed 2011-1 and Put up for Auction in St John’s NF.

CCGS E.P. LE QUÉBÉCOIS

Another CG Patrol vessel Snuck in to tie up at the Dartmouth Coast Guard Base. I believe this one to be the CCGS E.P. LE QUÉBÉCOIS

Canadian Coast Guard Activities

The Louis M. Lauzier moved from the coast Guard base in Dartmouth to the South Battery (Bishops Landing) She will not be open for tours, Despite her public location.

Earl gray departed for some Buoy Maintenance in the approaches

Busy Day

Todays First arrivals were CMA-CGM’s Stat Gera,

and Melfi Lines Hansa Catilina

Followed By the Curise Ships Massdam (pier 20) and Caribian Princess (pier 22)

CCGS Earl Grey Entered port Just Prior to 0900

and HMCS Montreal and HMCS Moncton Departed.

The PCTC Electra Arrived in advance of Atlantic Cartier,

But Had to wait for the PCTC CSAV Rio Salado to Depart AutoPort, as she was running late.

While the Navy Conducted Winching Exercises on the jetty at Shearwater.

Halifax Inshore Rescue

Halifax Inshore rescue is a service offered by the Coast Guard to Supplement regular SAR Services During the Busy recreational boating season between Victoria Day and Labour Day. Ribs are staffed by university Students.

Holiday Island off to Caribou NS.

Holiday Island departed the Nova Dock unassisted this afternoon, turned around in the basin, and headed back to Caribou NS.

CCGS Louis St Laurent is due in the Nova Dock Tomorrow.
